Speaking in general terms, every 4 years on November 3rd, the presidential elections take place in the US. The president is the head of state in the US. The person who wins the most votes in any particular state, wins the electoral votes of that state. On the 2nd Wednesday of December, the Electoral College meets and the candidate with the most electoral votes is declared the winner.

It should be noted that based on this system, the president is NOT elected on the basis of the total national votes, this system is based on the winner of each individual state.
