The alligator is coloured to look like a log, and the texture of their backs looks like a log as well to keep them camoflaughed. They are able to remain perfectly motionless for long periods of time as well.

Alligators are known as 'the living fossil' because they haven't changed in a long, long time. They've been around for 200 MILLION years. The 'death roll' is one of their behaviors, and also the short lunge with hard snap of the jaw is a survival behavior.
