How was France divided during the war in World War 2?

After the Revolution, they wanted to replace the feudal system of Duchies and Counties by a territorial unit that didn't correspond to anything that had previously existed. They chose to name this new territorial unit - le département - after rivers or mountains or some other natural entity.

They were divided in WWII because after the

French government handed over North France to the Germans by force with no

choice, the South France citizens weren't to

happy about this decision. The South France

people eventually created Vichy Frane. Then

the French Republic made Free France Force

which won many battles. This soon made the

Nazis push harder on France. Obviously this

small band of troops couldn't defeat all the

Nazis. But they began to occupy areas in

Africa and Asia where they conducted their

business there. Only North France was taken.

But south France remained free but they were still Germans around fighting. On maps
