The Maned Wolf is endangered because of habitat loss that will become farmland. It is also killed by being run over by cars, poachers, the giant kidney worm, and age. The Maned Wolf lives 12-15 yrs. and mates at 2 yrs. old

Maned wolves are also endangered because of their fur and especially their mane is very popular for winter coats. People keep hunting them for their fur. Which i think is COMPLETELY STUPID!! why do people have to wear animals i mean its not like you see people walking around with people jackets...

Maned wolves are often shot for hunting domestic chickens or for certain body parts such as the eyes believed to have magical properties. They will also be killed by domestic dogs. The species is vulnerable to the giant kidney worm and a metabolic disorder called cystinura, which causes the renal system to be unable to absorb the amino acid cystine. This causes crystals to form in the kidney and bladder, causing death.

By far the biggest reason is habitat destruction. The maned wolf lives in the grasslands of South America, which is prime territory for agraculture. When the grasslands are transformed into cattle ranges and farms maned wolves loose their prey. They're also pretty shy and prefer to stay away from humans. They require a relitively large home range with little overlaping between individuals (especially of the same sex). Habitat fragmentation causes individuals to be trapped within small spaces of land that are still suitable habitat.

This causes inbreeding, which dramatically lowers genetic variablility. If a disease goes through a population, some individuals survive because some random mutation caused by genetic variability gave them an adaptation. But if there's not much genetic variability, a species becomes more suseptable to threats such as diseases. This results in a lower population, which results in more inbreeding, which results in even less genetic variability ect.

Hope that was useful.

Humans hunt and kill wolves. Humans also destroy their habitat.

Humans also restore gray wolves to areas where they were eliminated, and this species is not endangered as a species. Some local races are, however.

Are wolves either extinct or endangered?

Well... some wolves, like the maned wolf, are extinct, killed by humans, as well as some, like the timber wolf, which are endangered. There are only roughly 150,000 timber wolves left, so they are close to extinction (as people shoot at LEAST 150 a day altogether) but are not quite yet extinct.
