A small incision is made into the bladder through the skin just above the pubic bone ( that's why it's called supra [above] pubic) and held in place by a small balloon that is inflated with saline.
1. They will wash the area. This is a sterile procedure since the inside of the bladder is sterile.
2. Insert numbing gel on the catheter and into your urethra.
3. Insert the catheter through the urethra in the penis.
4. There's a tiny balloon on the catheter, at the top, and in it they insert sterile water so it blows up. That is how it will stay inside your bladder.
5. They attach a bag to the end of the catheter hanging outside of the penis so the urine will end up there. There are bags you can empty or bags you have to change completely.
The catheter is threaded up the urethra and into the bladder until the urine starts to flow. The catheter is taped to the upper thigh and attached to a drainage system.
At the same time as the catheter is inserted, a second electrode is placed on the patient's skin.
