First person narrative tells the story from a first-person point of view.

"I walked into the room and noted the gun on the table. It was a forty-four magnum, I recognized it immediately from my experience in the Gum factory. It had chocolate sauce all over it. I was unsure at first but I dared a sniff and, as nobody was watching, a self-indulgent lick. It was the good stuff."

Third person narrative tells the story from an observer's point of view.

"He walked into the room and noted the gun on the table. It was a forty-four magnum, he recognized it immediately from his experience in the Gum factory. It had chocolate sauce all over it. He was unsure at first but then dared a sniff and, as nobody was watching, a self-indulgent lick. He found it to be the good stuff."

C.Hainsaw says that third person narration tells a story without first person (I, me, we, us) pronouns. C.Hainsaw says that third person narration tells the story from the perceived perspective of the author.

While it is a bit archaic to place oneself directly into a story, much as I've done above, the previous serves as an example (albeit a poor one). Typically, the third person will be told from an omniscient (all knowing, aware of the thoughts and motives of all characters) or a limited (aware of the thoughts and motivations of only one or a few characters) perspective. It is by far the most common perspective for writing.

In most cases, the identity of the first person to use any particular surname is lost to history.
