Typing speed is measured in Words Per Minute (WPM). For measuring purposes, a "word" is five characters long. If you use software to learn typing, the software calculates the rate.

You can measure you speed of typing using a special typing test. Mostly it is an online service or a desktop program you download and setup on your computer. You will need to type various words and at the end you will receive the result in wpm which means the amount of words per minute.

You measure typing speed by setting time such as one minute, three minutes, or five minutes. Any time frame you want.

Then you type for that period of time, no more no less.

A word is considered 5 strokes, including spacing. That's a mean average.

There are numerous ways to calculate the total amount of words with that.

You can determine how many keystrokes are in a line.

Then multiply that by the number of lines you've typed.

Don't count incomplete lines; instead, count off your words then add that to the sum above.

One you have the total number of words you've typed, then divide that by however many minutes you've timed off.

That will tell you how many words per minute you type. The formula would look something like this:

# words per line

X # of lines typed

subtotal

+ additional words

subtotal

÷ # of minutes

total words per minute types
