A seal pup will initially nurse for about 5-7 days. In that time the mother will lose close to 20 lbs while the baby will gain about 5 lbs per day. Depending on species, a baby seal will nurse for from 1 to 3 years as the mother repeatedly leaves to forage, then returns to the baby. The larger species, such as elephant seals, will nurse longer.
Once weaned the mother will leave the pup to fend for itself. The pup will cry on the ice for its mother to return but will eventually make its way to the ocean to hunt on its own.
