You can carefully squeeze the paw of the hamster to check the length of the hamsters claw. The hamsters claws are too long when the curve around. It is very rare for a hamster to need their claws cutting.

This is a very unusual question in the sense that the answer varies a huge amount.

There are a few breeders who breed hairless hamsters, which obviously don't grow fur.

Some hamsters are a variety called 'Rex', which is a very longhaired version and differs to the usual longhaired version as the fur stands up, as opposed to lying flat. They tend to have curly whiskers.

Long haired hamsters are just as the name implies, they have a long hair and a little 'skirt' around their tail.

Females usually have shorter hair than males, but this isn't the cage with some breeders who are selectively breeding females with long fur.

At about the age of 3 months, hamsters are almost fully grown and will usually continue looking as they do at that point until the end of their life.

What length do hamsters nails have to be cut at?

Usually a hamster will not need its claws cutting. It is defiantly advisable to take the hamster to the vets if you think they need cutting. When they are cut they should be cut just above where the pink of the hamsters skin ends. This should defiantly not be done with out the correct equipment as it can be very painful for the hamster if he is cut down to his skin. The claw is too long if it curls round.

Does hamsters do any harm to people?

Generally, no, but hamsters have very long, strong, sharp foreteeth that can bite down, to the point that blood is drawn or even severe damage is done, depending on where it bit, how long, and how hard. Their claws can also be sharp and scratch whoever is holding them if one is not careful.
