An Irish president, the head of state can serve two terms of seven years each. The leader of the Irish government is a separate position. The official title is Taoiseach. A general election must be held in Ireland at least every 5 years. After an election the Taoiseach is chosen. The same Taoiseach could be chosen again, so there is no limit as to how long a Taoiseach can serve.
A general election must be held in Ireland at least once every 5 years. It can be held sooner than that though. An Irish president is the head of state, but not the head of government. The term for an Irish president is 7 years, and a president can only serve 2 terms. A president can be elected by the people, or if there is agreement amongst the main political parties on a candidate, or there is no other candidates, a president can be chosen without an election. The current president, Mary McAleese, was elected in 1997. At the end of her first term, no other candidates opposed her and she was automatically returned for a second term without an election.
A president has a 7 year term and can serve two terms. A government has a 5 year term, but it is possible to have the same government re-elected several times, so in theory the head of the government, which in Ireland is not the president, but what is known as the Taoiseach, could serve for many years. The longest a Taoiseach has served was 16 years.
