Catherine the II or Catherine the Great was Empress of Russia 1762-1796. So the type of government she lived in would be considered an empire. She was the longest reigning female leader of Russia and ushered the nation into what many consider it's Golden Age. She came to power by overthrowing her own husband. "In June 1762 Catherine took an active part in a coup against her husband Emperor Peter III. He was overthrown and later killed "in an accident", and Catherine became Russia's autocratic ruler. Throughout her long reign she undertook many reforms and ensured the extension of the Russian Empire by acquiring territories in Southern Ukraine and the Crimea. Amongst her reforms was the extension of rights and privileges granted to the Russian nobility, which won Catherine popularity among the Russian social elite." However despite being known as one of Russia's Great Leader's she was actually a Prussian Princess by birth.
The Russian nobility weren’t willing to free the people who were in serfdom. Catherine the Great presented the idea to her court and was turned down.
