He was born in Westminster, London, in 1659. He was the organist of the large church, Westminster Abbey. He had a house nearby and when his wife took a dislike to him staying out late she told the servants to lock the door and not let him in. He caught a cold and died, aged 35, in 1695. Knowing what music he already had written by then, it is one of the greatest tragedies of music that he died so young.

Henry dissolved their marriage saying it was never legal because Catherine had been his brother's wife in 1533.
