Sputnik was the first artificial Earth satellite, sent into orbit by Russia. The long-retired Sputnik rocket that was used to lift off the Sputnik 1, 2, and 3 payloads was an unmanned orbital carrier rocket (8K71PS) from the R-7 family of rockets, similar to America's (also retired) Vanguard and Juno I rockets.
Sputnik 2 was a Russian satellite that was launched into orbit. It carried a dog and crashed into Earthâ??s atmosphere.
November 3th 1957, launched on Sputnik 2(not to be confused withKorabl-Sputnik 2.) Laika was the first animal in orbit also the first to die in orbit.
The USSR (Soviet Union), which was in a "space race" with the US after both countries salvaged parts of Nazi Germany's V-2 program. They launched Sputnik I, the first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth, on October 4, 1957.Sputnik is Russian for "fellow traveler" (of Earth). Sputnik I weighed 84 kg (184 pounds), traveled at over 28,000 kilometers per hour (17,000 miles per hour) and continued to orbit until January 4, 1958.The Russians!
Mars cannot orbit the earth. It orbits the Sun aprox. every 2 Earth years.
It was an artificial satellite that went into orbit around the earth
Sputnik was a series of satellites built and launched by the then Soviet union. Sputnik 1 and 2 became the first two man made objects to attain orbit around the Earth.
Sputnik with its puppy dog passenger( Laika ) was launched in October 1957, and remained in orbit until early 1958, when it reentered EarthÂ’s atmosphere and burned up Sputnik 1 was in orbit for 3 months, completing 1440 orbits. Sputnik 2, Laika's flight, was in orbit for 162 days. There were other missions, but these two, especially Sputnik 1, were the ones to capture the world's - especially the US'- attention.
The first artificial satellite to orbit the Earth was a Soviet satellite named Sputnik I. It was launched by the USSR on October 4, 1957, followed by Sputnik 2 in November.

The first sputnik didn't actually crash but rather burned as it reentered the atmosphere in January of 1958. There were actually over 40 sputnik's released into space.
The second satellite to be sent into Earth orbit was "Sputnik 2".
If they can put a satellite in orbit they can launch a H-bomb at us too. It wasn't quite true with Sputnik 1, but it was with Sputnik 2.
A dog
Sputnik 1 launched by the Soviet Union on October 4 1957 it stayed in orbit for 2 months before re-entering the Earth's atmosphere on January 4 1958.
