It is not known how many words were in the first dictionary, the oldest being an English-Latin work dated 1538. In 1583 a 'general table of words was compiled by Sir Thomas Elyot. Number of words still not known. Robert Mulcaster compiled a dictionary in 1583 containing 8,000 words.
From what I have researched that is incorrect. Published in 1604, school master Robert Cawdry's Table Alphabeticall (yes it is spelled with two L's) is widely regarded to be the first true dictionary in English. It contained about 2,500 words and a brief definition for each.
Each dictionary is different and it may contain different words. You should just flip through the dictionary and see for yourself what words are on page 229.

What unabridged means is that the dictionary contains all the words which the dictionary writer wrote definitions for. An abridged dictionary contains only those words that an editor thought you would likely need to look up, and leaves out those which are extremely technical or obsolete.
