In terms of radioactivity, the city was considered immediately habitable as the levels of residual radioactivity was well below any that might produce acute illness.

In terms of housing and infrastructure, the city was effectively completely demolished. It took about two years with large amounts of financial aid from the occupation government to build a fully habitable city, almost from scratch.

Note: although the levels of residual radioactivity were well below any that might produce acute illness, chronic illness has resulted from two different causes.

  1. survivors of the bombing itself had received much higher doses at the time of detonation and all had acute radiation illness. this population has had many and often multiple chronic illnesses attributable to radiation
  2. those born after the bombing and new residents that have moved in receive continuing very low levels of radioactivity (the residual radioactivity decreases over time). the exact long term effects of this are still uncertain, but higher than normal rates of many illnesses of often uncertain cause have been seen in this population.
