Louis XIII ordered construction of a hunting lodge in 1624 and in 1661, Louis XIV ordered architect Louis Le Vau, landscape architect Andre Le Notre, and painter-decorator Charles Le Brun to begin a detailed renovation and expansion of the lodge into a palace. the royals moved into the palace in 1682.

The Palace of Versailles was the official residence of the Kings of France from 1682 until 1790. It was originally a hunting lodge, built in 1624, by Louis XIII. It was expanded by Louis XIV beginning in 1669.

In the seventeenth century. (They started building the actual Palace in 1662 and in 1682 the King Louis XIV and Queen (Madame de Maintenon, his second wife) and their whole court moved in. The Palace was officially never finished, since Louis XIV had a lot more construction planned, but that never happened.)
