The first manned space flight was by the U.s.s,R in the Sputnik.
The first country to launch the first successful manned space flight was Russia. Yuri Gagarin was the first person in space as a result of that achievement.
Manned space flight is a voyage into space with a human passenger on board.
On May 5 1961 Mercury 3 took Alan Shepard to space making it America's first manned space flight
The first manned space flight was in 1961, piloted by Yuri Gagarin (USSR).
The Mercury Program was the first manned space flight program,
The USSR or Russia. They had the first satellite, the first animal in space, the first manned space flight, and the first space walk. But we beat them to the moon.
On 5 May, 1961 Alan Shepherd was launched on a sub-orbital flight into space aboard Freedom 7, the first manned mission of Project Mercury.
That would be John Glenn. Alan Shepard was the first American in space, but his flight was suborbital. Yuri Gagarin beat them both--his first flight made one complete orbit.

Vladimir Suvorov has written: 'The first manned spaceflight' -- subject(s): Manned space flight, History
Yuri Garguin, Russia, first human to go into space, and to make a complete orbit of the Earth. Alan Shepard, American, first American to go into space and made a suborbital flight. Gus Grissom, American, 2nd American in space, made a suborbital flight (did not orbit all the way around the Earth). John Glen, American, 3d American in space, made an complete orbit of the planet Earth.
April 12, 1961. Note: That was also Gagarin's last space flight. He never went to space again.
The first man in space was the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who made a single orbit of the Earth on April 12, 1961. The first US astronaut into space was Alan Shepard, who made a suborbital flight on May 5, 1961. This was followed by another suborbital flight by Gus Grissom, and by a three-orbit flight by John Glenn on February 20, 1962. The US astronauts were part of NASA's Project Mercury.

So we can find more facts about space.
Alan Shepard Jr.
An Orbital space flight simply means that you have accelerated a space craft fast enough so it stays in orbit (cicular path) around the Earth. A suborbital flight means you have reached the limit of space (anything over 100 km high) but not enough speed to completely circle the Earth.
There were several unmanned rocket and missile tests that were "suborbital" as early as 1957, pushing payloads into high altitudes. Later tests lofted monkeys and chimps briefly into space. The first MANNED suborbital flight for the US was the Freedom 7 capsule piloted by US Navy CDR Alan B. Shepard (1923-1998) on May 5, 1961. The Mercury-Redstone 3 rocket did not provide the necessary thrust for Shepard to achieve a complete orbit of the Earth, as the USSR's Yuri Gagarin had done three weeks earlier. CDR Shepard (later RADM) had one other space "first". Commanding the Apollo 14 lunar mission ten years later in 1971, he was the first person to ever hit a golf ball on the moon.
No, he was assassinated before the first American manned space flight occurred.
