In Japan, the academic school year consists of students attending classes for 220 out of 365 days in the year; this is further broken down into a trimester schedule, meaning the school year is broken into 3 semesters.
The school day generally begins around 8AM and concludes around 3PM; although, many students are involved with school clubs and sports, so this time is lengthened.
The first semester/term is from the first of April till mid July; this is followed by a summer break lasting anywhere from 1-2 months.
The second semester is from early September till near the end of December; this is followed by a winter break till the end of the year.
The third semester is from the beginning of January till sometime in early March; this is followed by a short spring break consisting of a few weeks.
Graduation ceremony takes place in March while the enrollment ceremony occurs in early April.
This schedule varies from grade school to university, as some universities vary when they accept and graduate, as well as when they take breaks between semesters.

Lets see here.... 7th grade = 12 (normally) 8th grade = 13 9th grade = 14 and, because Japan uses a middle school system, a first year High School student would be 15 or 16 in Japan. Middle and High School are each 3 years I believe, although, some use the 4 year system.
