how many hours a week do paramedics work a week?

Paramedics in emergency medical services typically work 56 hours per week. There are traditionally three shifts that cover 24 hours per day.

One example of shift work would be 24 hours on duty and 48 hours off duty, totalling 10 working days per month.

actually a paramedic in the UK will work 37.5 hours per week they will also have to be available for on call duties which are added on to their normal hours of work

The hours of a paramedic vary vastly. Many places work 24 hours on 48 hours off. Some places work 48 hours on, 96 hours off. There are lots of 12 hour shifts. An example of 12 hour rotations would be:

5 days on, 2 days off, 2 days on, 5 days off. Sometimes they do 7 on and 7 off.

It really varies by where you live and the call volume.

Paramedics can work anywhere from a few hours, to 36 hours on-call time. It depends on your jurisdiction, laws, and how their employers schedule their paramedics. In my area, paramedics spend 36 hours in a neighborhood station, and they respond to calls in a similar fashion to firefighters.

This depends on the area. I live in a metropolitan area, and the medics here normally work three 14 hour shifts, or four 11 hour shifts in a week. So they typically work 42-44 hours a week.

In a more rural area, medics will work around three 24 hour shifts a week, totaling about 72 hours a week.

In the two cases, the medics make the same annual amount, with rural medics making less per hour, but working more hours a week. This is because the call volume is higher in a metropolitan area, and the medic is spending more time with patients, and less time waiting for a call.

In both cases, it is possible to pick up extra shifts as overtime, but the above is what medics are normally scheduled.

The typical day of a Paramedic varies greatly depending on the agency where they are employed, and the sizes of the community were they are working. Paramedics that work for EMS systems are primary called upon to answer medical 911 calls. Rural areas with small populations may employ a one, two person Paramedic team, which may not run a single call during their 24 hour shift. Whereas, a large metropolitan area many have fifty or more, two person Paramedic teams. These teams often work 12 or 8 hour shifts because their call volume is so large. Busy EMS systems can easily run over 25 calls in a 12 hour time period meaning the crew hardly has time to eat or pee because they are so busy. Other Paramedics work on cruise ships or as park rangers and can spend a whole day relaxing at sea or hiking Yellow Stone without a single patient. Most Paramedics are not that lucky thou and the vast majorly of medics spend their 24 hour shifts trying to wash and restock their ambulance between calls, hoping for a slow night so they can have dinner and maybe a nap. The time spent on calls involves a rapid assessment of the patients' complaints followed by a transport decision and treatment en-route to the receiving facility or hospital. Treatments available in the pre-hospital setting vary depending on the scope of practice for each agency but commonly include; verbal coaching, splinting, hemorrhage control, establishing an intravenous or intraosseous medication site, medication administration, CPR, cardiac defibrillation or cardioversion, endotracheal intubation, drug assisted intubation, chest decompression, and surgical cricothyroid procedure.

What is it like being an emt how many hours a week do you work Does it leave enough time for a personal life do they make enough money to live off?

Well, there are different levels of to being an EMT; there are EMT-B's, EMT-I's (in some states) and EMT-P. So I suggest you do some investigation work and decide which one you actually want to pursue. Overall, being an EMT is a fun gig. Depending on where you live definetly determines how many hours a week you'll work to what you'll actually see. If you work in a busy city, you'll definetly see some things and work a ton of hours. Once again, pay varies with where you work. A lot of EMT's work several hours over their norm because in more cases that not, the pay leaves something to be desired.

How long does it take to be a EMT 1-Basic?

This differs from State-to-State, but becoming an EMT-Basic usually requires a high-school diploma and 120-150 hours of training. To be fully certified as an EMT-Basic (also known as EMT-1, EMT, etc.) you need to have completed those things, and passed a state-given or national test (NREMT test).
