Sandstorms
Sandstorms can last anywhere from a few hours to several days, depending on the intensity of the storm and environmental conditions. In some cases, the winds that kick up the sand can persist for longer periods, causing ongoing sandstorms in the affected area.

Sandstorms cannot be prevented. They are the result of the (very) large scale movement of air. It would be like trying to prevent a hurricane, though the hurricane is, in general, a much larger mass of moving air. Quote from website below: "Sandstorms are largely caused by drought, land desertification, irrational utilization of forested land, and overgrazing." So, therefore, sandstorms can be prevented, in the long run, if we prevent these things that cause sandstorms. See link for more information.
