A sloth has 3 stomachs. Due to the massive quantities of leaves it has to digest it is a slow process. In the wild they are dependent on sunshine to warm their tummies to aid digestion. During the monsoon season it is not uncommon to see dead sloths on the ground due to their food fermenting in their stomachs because of lack of warmth from the sun. Sloths have benefited from human intervention solely due to the ability to warm their tummies under the night lights of civilization.
