You go through 4 years of undergraduate institution 4 years of medical school and then you have to spend about 2-3 years in your specialty area depending on what it is. Then you have your student intern and your residency so all together your looking at 13 years before you are certified in that area of practice. But an Oncologist is someone who deals in the area of cancer so their training is specific.

Medical oncologist Surgical oncologist and Radiation oncologist Training in the USA will take 4 years B degree, 4 years medical school and 5 years of residency. A state board license to practice as a registered oncologist is required following the many years of training.

Becoming a registered nurse takes 2-4 years of full time school. An associate's degree in nursing takes 2 years and a bachelor's degree in nursing takes 4 years.
