Actually it takes a long series of waves to erode a cliff. A wave erodes a cliff because every time it washes away, it take little bits and pieces of rock minerals. Soon, all the surface minerals are washed away, and the process begins again, which will result in erosion of the cliff. The cliff will either take on a new shape or erode away completely.
