GOLDFISH MATTERIt depends on whether you know that you have a male and a female fish. Your tank needs to be big and be filtered regularly and have plants and stones at the bottom to make the fish comfortable.

Goldfish do not "hold their eggs". When water conditions are exactly right they develop ova (eggs) and that is refered to as "comming into breeding condition". Once they are ready they will "spawn".

it all depends on the body. once you see that the gold fish abdomen is getting bigger and sore then you know it time to lay the eggs. it takes a month or so for the eggs to hatch. but it will go quicker than you know it. once the eggs hatch, immediately remove the little ones out of the tank. but what you should do while you see the abdomen is getting bigger and sore, buy a separate tank (it does not have to be big it can be medium sized) and put the goldfish in the separate tank. this way you will only have to remove the mother because the mother eats the little ones.
