About 1 to 2 hours.
If your diagnosis is BACTERIAL tonsillitis, an antibiotic should improve symptoms within 24-48 hours. However, tonsillitis may also be caused by viral infections (ie, mono, adenovirus,, etc.), which antibiotics do not help.
It takes, in general, 7 to 10 days of medication to cure the infection. But you can see an amelioration in 48 to 72 hours. You should take the medication to the end, do not stop when you think it is cured.
Your sore throat should be gone 72 hours from the first dose of the antibiotic as long as you are taking it as prescribed and your condition is actually caused by a bacteria. The majority of sore throat are caused by viruses which antibiotics do not help. So unless you had a positive culture for strep throat you probably have a virus which goes away on its own after about 5 days.
That will depend on the type of term being fought, among other factors. The usual prescription is either 7 days, 10 days, or 2 weeks. Best to ask a doctor.

Well, tonsilitis can get quite painful if left untreated for a long period of time. But, if you are sure you are completeley unable to visit your doctor, then it would probably take a couple of weeks. But maybe you should pop down to your local chemist and get some pain killers or antiseptic throat sweets.
