No. Just pleasure! Certain scientists may hike up the mountain to carry out particular observations or studies, but simply hiking up the thing is just for recreation - and very worthwhile at that.
I have not yet made the hike myself but I have heard the hike up to the top of Deseret Peak in Grantsville will take you about 5-6 hours round trip from the trail head. It is about 3.5 miles from the trail head up to the peak and it is a very steady incline so be prepared.
