Usually at least six years of college to the Master's level, then licensure by the state. There are exceptions in some fields*, and many so-called therapists who are only minimally qualified and working under someone else's supervision.

*A person with a bachelor's degree, for one example, can become a Certified Addiction Professional or Certified Mental Health Professional without additional college, but the special courses and the written and oral exams amount to about the same thing -- with perhaps more practical aspects in terms of what is learned.
