It depends upon the mode: roadway, railway or hiking. The cog railway (operating since 1860s) takes about an hour from Marshfield Station. Driving up the toll road has been done by competitors in 12 minutes, but the average is about a half hour and the same back down. These routes are NOT open all year long.
Hiking time depends upon which route is selected and the weather conditions. The shortest routes are 4 or 5 miles. The AMC trail guide says it will take 4 and a half hours from Pinkham Notch to the summit via Tuckerman Ravine (six hours twenty mins round trip), or 4 hours ten mins via Lion Head Trail or Huntington Ravine, or 5 hours via the Davis Path and Boott Spur, six hours 40 minutes via Crawford Path (Mt. Clinton Rd), 4 hrs ten mins from Base Road via the Ammonoosuc Ravine (7 hours round trip).
There are dozens of branches and combinations, some of which are too dangerous to consider during winter.
