It is different for every woman, and for each woman it is different for each birth that she has! The average, expected thing is 1cm per hour (getting up to 10cm), however in reality it often takes a lot longer than this, particularly with a first baby. This is because after a first baby, the cervix often stays at 1cm dilated, so you are already 1cm dilated for the next baby. Sometimes you can start off quickly, dilating at 1cm per hour or even 1cm per 1/2 hour, but then get slower towards the end of labour.

You are only 29 weeks your doctor just told you i am half a centimeter dilated and 75 percent effaced what does this mean?

Your cervix must dilate (open up) to 10 centimeters before you can essentially, 'push' the baby out. So half a cm is good progress, though it seems a bit early at 29 weeks? 75% effaced: you have to be 100% effaced (thinned out) for the cervix to fully dilate & ready to deliver the baby. So you're just about finished there.

How do you dilate if you're thirty nine weeks pregnant?

There are some suspicious advice about certain home remedies that are supposed to help a full-term pregnancy go into labor. But none of these are recommended and none of them are proven safe. There's really no way to force yourself to dilate further than you already have at this point. You will just have to be patient and the baby will come out when it is ready. If you do not dilate when you should, you will have to be admitted into labor and delivery at the hospital. Under doctor's supervision you can be induced with pitocin which will speed the labor and delivery process.
