The amount of time required to complete an early childhood education degree depends on your choice of school, and method of learning (online or campus). I would do it online because alot of online schools will help you reduce the amount of time it will take you to complete the degree. If employers in your area will accept degrees from DETC accredited colleges that are recognized by CHEA and Dept of Education then I would recommend Ashworth College. It is the most inexpensive school I have ever seen at 80 bucks per credit hour. It is also self paced so you could complete the degree in as little as six months. A bonus is all the tests are open book. Another school that is very similar is Penn Foster College. But, if the employers in your area do not accept DETC accreditation then I would check out Peru State College, and Ashford University. They are both regionally accredited and are completely online.

If you go to school on campus it will more than likely take you around 2 years if you go full time. But either way you go, most child care centers will hire you while your are working on the degree. My mother in law is the VP of a child life center and she hires students of early child ed all the time. GOOD LUCK!

The associates degree is designed as a two year program of study as a full-time student provided the student takes the degree as prescribed by the college, and provided the student does not require prerequisite coursework as a result of basic skills testing. There are some programs of study that may take a bit longer depending on the number of credits required. Usually these are programs within the health related fields. In addition, for students who require developmental course work as a result of basic skills testing, it would take longer. How much longer would depend on the extent of the developmental courses they are required to take. Evidently, those individuals who attend college on a part-time based would also extend their time in school. How much longer would depend on the credit load carried each semester. Typically, an associates degree takes between 60 and 64 credits to complete depending on the specific school, program of study, and state mandates.

There's no single "child care diploma." The basic certifications take about 3-6 months although some roles may require less. Certain child care roles (small, scale home based day care) require no certification at all. Others (teaching in a school) require at least a 4 year degree plus passing a teachers' certification exam.
