I'm pretty sure the timeframe varies by state. My state (Louisiana) didn't send my son's to me until he was almost 9 months old. I'm not sure if that's usually how long it takes, or because the vital records department was swamped at the time (even in 2007) due to Hurricane Katrina. I want to say, though, that it seemed like they told me 6 months was the wait time. I got his social security card before his birth certificate!

∙ 15y agoYou should receive a 'certificate of live birth' from the hospital where the baby was born. At this time the forms should have been supplied to record the birth and supply a birth certificate with the State of California sometimes a fee is taken-and register the baby with a Social Security ID. This takes upto 90 days in some case-but usually 2-6 weeks. You can find out if the birth was registered properly with the State via your local government. As long as you have the 'certificate of live birth' you should have no problems.
