Can you use Ivermectin to treat your dog for heartworms we were told you can use .10cc orally every 3 days for 2 weeks continue once a month of the rest of his life?

For PREVENTION of heartworms (in a dog that does not already have them), 1mL (1cc) of 1% ivermectin solution "for cattle and swine" contains ten milligrams of ivermectin, which is the same as ten THOUSAND micrograms of ivermectin. The correct dose of 100% ivermectin is only six micrograms per kilogram (2.20462 pounds) of dog. This means that 1mL (1cc) of 1% ivermectin solution is the correct amount to give to a (hippo size) dog who weighs 3,674 pounds. One tenth of a mL (cc) for a (black bear size) dog who weighs 367.4 pounds. One hundredth of a mL (cc) for a (normal size) dog who weighs 36.74 pounds. One thousandth of a mL (cc) for a tiny dog who weighs 3.674 pounds.By far the most common WILDLY INCORRECT dosage mentioned on the internet is one mL (cc) per 100 pounds of dog or one-tenth mL (cc) per 10 pounds of dog.If you want to read a long Usenet post that goes into much more detail, go to google.com and search for the exact quote"one gram = one million micrograms = 1,000,000 mcg = 1,000,000 ug"*********Ivermectin is the primary active ingredient in many of the commercially available canine heartworm preventions. However, the actual dosing is in micrograms and for this reason is so minute a dose as it can often not be measured by conventional syringes. Also, one must account in the dosing schedule for the strength of the ivermectin solution you are using - traditional feed-store sold bottle of liquid Ivomec are a 1% solution which means 10 milligrams per 1 cc, which again is a huge overdose for many dogs, including most large breeds. Finally, if your dog is a breed classified in the Herding Group (see akc.org if not certain your group) or a mix breed that could include a Herding breed, Speak with your primary veterinarian before beginning an ivermectin regime, as many of these dogs have a "sensitivity" to ivermectin known as the MDR-1 gene.Haley.**°**Vets and the manufacturer prefer you purchase the more expensive meds packaged just for household pets. But not everyone can afford that monthly expense, and often the Ivermectin (now available as a generic: Ivermax) is the difference between life and death. But that .10cc (mL) you mention is for every ten POUNDS of dog, not for every dog (for kilos divide by 2.2). You need to be as precise as you can, though the pills aren't all THAT precise. The hypodermic needle will be calibrated in fifths or tenths of an mL. For a 60 pound dog, for example, you'd draw up .6 mL (cc), which is to say three of the smaller calibrations in ⅕ increment syringes, which would, as Haley indicated, equal 6 mg. But, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, don't give your dog that much every three days; you'll kill it. There is massive contradiction on this point on the internet; every two weeks is also recommended, as is once a month as per usual dosing for a healthy dog as a preventative. The web is a wealth of information and misinformation, with the latter dominating. So, as a last result, I called a vet. She says the monthly dose is the proper regimen. Ivermectin is a level IV toxin, which is to say it is very safe in solution. Even in herding dogs, which are more sensitive to it, the prophylactic dose will probably be tolerated. As for how long you must give the medicine, the recommendation to treat your dog for the rest of its life is not because you are managing the heartworm infestation at a level the dog can tolerate; that's an unpleasant prospect. The Ivermectin will kill only the cute little baby heartworms. They are harmless to the animal until they have been taken into a mosquito's gut and then returned to a dog. Ivermectin kills them during this process before they infest the heart, so no new worms add to your animal's burden. It is possible if you can't afford the treatment for the adult worms (an arsenic compound), or if you simply think it too dangerous, to give only Ivermectin and forego the more toxic treatment. The adult worms will die of old age in a couple of years and, if you have been faithful in your Ivermectin treatments, your dog will be heartworm free, though two years of heartworms might have damaged its heart to some degree. You can also choose to employ the more drastic treatment to eliminate the adult worms at any time. Any adult worms that have gone to their reward in the meantime will improve your dog's chances by that much. The danger lies in a lot of killed adult worms clogging up heart and lung blood vessels, which is why you don't want to kill them all at once and why the dog must be kept quiet for a month after the more drastic treatment, to lessen the chances of a worm fragment being forced by increased blood pressure into a vessel, clogging it. Fatalities do happen at this stage, so some choose to go only with Ivermectin even if money isn't an issue. Waiting has its downside, too, though. That's the situation as I understand it. This should not be interpreted as veterinary advice; I am not one
