The US has been democratic ever since it was founded, back in 1781 (the date of the British surrender at Yorktown). Prior to this, the Rebel Continental Congress, which coordinated the rebellion against the British Crown starting the in 1774, was a democratic institution as well.

It is worth clarifying that the US has consistently been a Representative Republic, which is a form of indirect democracy. The US has never been a direct democracy. The closest the US comes to a direct democracy is when some states propose initiatives as referenda for the voters, but the US Federal government does not usually propose referenda.

If by democracy you mean people having real control over their lives, then it has never existed. It certainly can’t exist under capitalism, where the vast majority are dependent on an employer and the whims of the market.

Actually, the United States of America is NOT a democracy- it is a Constitutional Republic. There is a difference.
