You really need to be more specific with your questions, pal...you left it a little open-ended here. Assuming that you're not actually guilty of any crime here; and that you're just asking out of curiosity, here's a few things you'll need to specify before getting any kind of helpful answer. However, if you are, indeed, guilty, I wish you the best of luck. If you killed someone in a 'spur-of-the moment' kind of way, you were probably messy about it and left evidence behind that will lead the authorities to you rather quickly - in which case, you're up $%*& creek (see: hire a great criminal defense lawyer...immediately).

Where exactly are you from? Depending on the nature of the murder, time served can greatly vary from one country/state/province to the other. And, if you're living in a place that has the death penalty, I might advise you that you be more worried about the time you have left to live; and not the length of the time served.

And, if you're asking this question in advance of carrying out some kind of [unsaid] action, it's not exactly murder in the second degree now, is it? haha.

But I'm not exactly well-versed in the law. My suggestion is that you go to your nearest public library, and do a little research on the criminal code for your region.

Normally, an attempted crime carries 1° less than the crime itself. Second-degree murder is punishable by up to life in prison. So normally attempted second-degree murder will be punishable by anywhere from 25 years to life (a first-degree felony, punishable by life).

Second degree murder refers to being guilty of killing someone, but the idea was not premeditated. In most states in the US, the law states that someone convicted of second degree murder should serve between ten and twenty five years in prison.
