It depends which part of Wales you are heading to, and also whether you go by motorway or on the 'A' roads. Getting to Cardiff or Newport using the M1 and M4 takes about 5 hours. Since the M4 is Wales's only motorway, going further into Wales North or West will take appreciably longer (i.e for somewhere like Carmarthen, add on another c.3 hours, for Aberystwyth add on another c.5). You can get into North Wales simply by going further up the M1 and M6, and then diverting left just South of Manchester- this is quicker than going on up through Wales itself, with all it's narrow mountain roads, and would get you to, say, Bangor or Caernarvon from London in about 8 hours.
