There is some challenge to what the time frame was. It was about 7 or eight years, but could have been a bit longer. It was published in 1937. His sons seem to recall parts of the story from sometime in the 1928 to 1930 time frame.

∙ 14y agoThe main action, from Bilbo setting out to the Battle of the Five Armies, takes place in the year 2941 of the Third Age. Bilbo comes home to the Shire the next year (2942 T.A.). Gandalf's and Balin's visit at the end of The Hobbit happens in 2949 T.A.
