Not very. The trick is to cut through Germany. Head for Salzburg and Munich.
From Vienna (Austria) to Zurich HB (Switzerland) can take from 9 to 12 hours... it's mainly crossing whole Austria from east to west just over the Swiss border. It seems that the most direct train connection takes 9h02min from Vienna to Zurich without changing. In Zurich you take any direct train (called "inter-cities") to Berne, where you change for Geneva... or you take any direct train from Zurich to Geneva, but they all pass Berne... so it's not really worthy to wait for a direct train (it doesn't last longer, you simply have to change at Berne). Zurich-Berne takes 58min and Berne-Geneva about 1h45min. That's quite exactly a journey that takes 12 hours (including waiting).
