Definately wait until after your freezing is gone as to not bite your lip, tongue, cheek etc. Ice Cream will be too cold as your mouth will be sensitive - I agree with the above and as well haven't heard anything of mashed potatoes either. I do know that you are not to "suck" as in using a straw or smoking etc. try to stay away from that function. You'll know once your freezing is out what you can handle in the food department.

It depends on the orthodontist's opinion as to the growth of the jaw and the need for space. Sometimes pulling teeth provides more room for the teeth to come in correctly. My children had retainers that changed the shape of their palatte--wore them for a year and their teeth came in nicely. We rotated a screw on the retainer weekly. We skipped the braces after that.
