It takes 6 years for a Master's degree if you include the 4 years getting a Bachelors. I believe you would go for an MSW (Master's in Social Work) but there may be other professional qualifications you might need. New Post Below: I have a Master's in Counseling Psychology (specialty School Counseling), which is different from the MSW. It took me four years to complete going part-time (includes one full year of field experience). MS Counseling Psychology prepares one for a career in counseling/psychotherapy--the focus is on counseling techniques/approaches, and one specializes in a select area (i.e., School Counseling, Community Counseling, Career Counseling, etc.). It takes a "wellness" approach to helping the client, which means that the counselor assumes the client ultimately has the power to help themselves (as the client base tends to struggle with less-severe psychopathology). The MSW degree includes some counseling courses; however, the bulk of the curriculum centers on utilizing community resources to help those who may not have the power to help themselves (in essence, you serve as the client's advocate). Sorry for being long-winded; I realize that this is probably more info than you had asked for.... -Eileen
