How many years do you have to go to college to be a surgeon?

You will need 4 years of Undergraduate Study where you will obtain a Bachelors Degree. A Bachelors Degree can either be a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or a Bachelor of Science (BS). This option is completely up to you. Note that Medical Schools favor (BS) a lot more than a (BA). You will then need to complete 4 years of Medical School. After Medical School is completed, you will then need to apply for a Surgical Residency Program. You will learn more about these programs in Medical School. You will then start your internship which is considered your 1st year of residency. You will begin to work full time at a hospital eventually earning your license to practice medicine. Make sure you complete your 1st year of residency in the State you want to practice medicine in. At the end of your 1st year of residency, you will have earned your title of (Dr.) with an (M.D. Medical Doctor) or (D.O. Doctor of Osteopathy) at the end of your name. You will then need to complete your Surgical Residency Program which is usually a 5-7 year process depending on the specialty you decide to pursue. You will be rotating through hospitals and clinics, learning more as you go. After this long process has come to a halt, you can then add (M.S. Medical Surgeon) to the end of your name as well.
