About 44, give or take depending on your accent. For example, Cockneys pronounce the word "bottle" with a glottal stop for the double t. Glottal stops are not included in the 44 sounds. On the other hand, sometimes vowels sounds can merge, so that some English speakers do not use some of the sounds. For example, in Canada and parts of the United States, Scotland and Ireland, the word "cot" is pronounced like the word "caught", whereas in England, and the rest of the US, Scotland and Ireland, "cot" has a separate vowel sound. The list of 44 sounds includes both, so if you are Canadian, you might use less than 44.
