As many as 100 divisions of British and French troops were involved in the Battle of the Somme. On the German side, it is estimated that about 50 divisions were used. A division often has as many as 20,000 men.

The casualties were in excess of 1 million men. Many of the British were killed even before reaching the front line. The German machine guns took a terrible toll. The artillery barrge, though heavy, was unable to prevent the Germans defending their positions. The British gain was about 9 square miles. It remains as a byword for the folly of Warfare.
