There are two Muslims in Congress. Congressman Keith Ellison, Democrat, of Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, which covers the Minneapolis area, is a Muslim first elected in 2006. Congressman Andre Carson, Democrat, of Indiana's 7th District, which covers portions of Indianapolis, is a Muslim first elected in 2008.

Under the constitution the US has religious freedom and when a person runs for office there is no religious requirement to be any particular religion. Our founding fathers had lived under a state religion and didn't wanted it repeated in the new nation. People in office or running for office have no obligation to state their religious beliefs to be in office.
