As of the year 2000, the AZA (Association of zoos and aquariums) released the species survival plan for all of the tiger species.
According to this link below, there are about 400-500 sumatran tigers left in the wild. They reside only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Some people may ask why can't zoos use artificial insemination on the tigers that they house within their zoos. Female tigers need to be physically stimulated by the male in order for their egg to be released. This is crazy WE need to let them live
There are under 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. The number is still decreasing as time goes on. It is probably around 350 now.
The Sumatran tiger is a critically endangered subspecies of tiger native to the Indonesian Island of Sumatra. About 20 years ago, there were approximately 500 wild Sumatran tigers in the wild. However, due to the destruction of their natural habitat, poaching, and being hunted for the mauling of people in the area, these rare tigers have been reduced to even smaller numbers. Scientists speculate that today there may be as little as 400 of these animals in the wild. Recent conservation efforts have been put into effect by the Indonesian government and other foundations to help to protect these wild animals and help them increase to more steady, self-sustaining numbers.
The sumatran tiger is the world's smallest tiger, males rarely weigh more than three hundred pounds. It is also one of the most endangered, the population standing at near six hundred.Measures are being taken to save large tracts of forest where it should be able to survive. How long this will last with the growing human population, remains to be seen.
It is estimated that only 400 to 500 of these endangered Sumatran tigers remain in the wild today.
As of March 2008, it was estimated that there were 300 Sumatran tigers left in the wild. I don't know how many are in captivity.

Many believe that the Sumatran tiger became isolated on the small island of Sumatra, because of climate change. The island is believed to have been created by water levels rising, which in turn stranded the animals. Sumatran tigers are the smallest of all tigers, which suits island life.
there are more than 40 types of rare tigers left
It is estimated that there are currently 1400 to 1600 Bengal tigers now in the wild.
