The command "show vtp status" will show you how many vlans are supported by the switch. The Cisco 2950 switch supports up to 64 VLANs.
The Cisco Catalyst 2960 can support up to 1005 VLANs locally.
You can give "sh vtp status" to check how many VLAN it supports to..

On the contrary, the Cisco Catalyst 2960 is a very well-known product. This switch is widely used in many small businesses. There are few which are unhappy with this switch.
The Cisco 2960 is a series switch which acts as a catalyst to allow Power over Ethernet in addition to traditional power. This can be helpful in a back up situation and to control a Local Access Network.

Use the console port to locally access the switch from a serial or USB interface of the PC.
I'm not sure but i think all switches 2xxx (2960) are layer 2 switches
If you want to shutdown a port on a Cisco 2960 Catalyst Switch you will need to connect to the router (either SSH, TelNet or connect using the Console cable) and enter the interface you want to shutdown. You will then need to enter the shutdowncommand. An example is given below for Fast Ethernet 0/2Router> enableRouter# configure terminalRouter(config)# interface fa0/2Router(config-if)# shutdown
The Cisco Catalyst 2960 must go through a few processes when it is first powered on. Like POST and loading the O/S and any configuration file that could be saved. After that is completed, depending on how it is configured, each active port will run through STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) to make sure there are no switching loops. Depending on which version is configured and how it could take up to 50 seconds for that port to go from a blocking state (no packet flow) to a forwarding state ( packet flow).

Depending on the size of the network and actual traffic requirements technically a "core layer switch" can scale from a 2960 all the way up to and beyond a 6500.
