Conditions for relieving oneself on a ship have, in general, reflected the conditions of contemporary society ashore. On a modern ship, shipboard bathrooms are quite similar to what you would find in onshore facilities. Prior to the development of bathrooms, ship passengers and crew used chamberpots aboard ship as they did on land. The contents had to be thrown overboard by the user or a servant. Sailing ships, especially military craft, had "heads" which hung overboard and enabled sailors to relieve themselves directly into the sea. Except for the Captain's head, these were not private compartments and exposed users to the prevailing weather.
