A quarter note equals 1 beat. So an eighth note equals one half of a beat. This is assuming you are using 4/4 time. In 4/4 time there are 4 beats to a measure. A measure would have 4 quarter notes. If you use all eighth notes you would have 8 notes in a measure. Two eighth notes equal 1 quarter note which equals 1 beat.

There are only so many note "denominations" so to speak. a "whole" note will last as long as the bar count indicated thus a single note drawn out for the length of the count. A bar count would be something like 1,2,3,4/2,2,3,4/3,2,3,4....and so on.

A "half" note will be two notes per measure.

quarter notes-4 and eighth notes-8, sixteenth notes -16, and thirty second notes-32. you will not often get anything higher than that.

Each note will get a single beat if the time signature indicates it. If the time signature is 4/4 that would mean that there are 4 beats per bar (measure) and the quarter note gets the beat as described above.

If a time signature indicates 6/8 time that would mean that there are 6 beats per bar and the eighth note get the beat. like so 1,2,3,4,5,6/2,2,3,4,5,6/3,2,3,4,5,6...

3/4 time is 1,2,3/2,2,3/3,2,3 and so on.
