About 1,000 African Americans fought on the side of the Colonists during the Revolutionary War. Another 500 fought on the British side of the war. There were also many more who enlisted in the navy for each side.

Figures on the exact numbers of Blacks fighting in the American Revolution are often disputed.

Not many "fought" since most blacks were not assigned to combat units. All combat Army and Marine units were segregated until 1949 (after WWII). The vast majority of blacks in the military during the WWII years were laborers in US Army construction battalions, who built rear area camps and roads, far from any combat action.

The USMC had very few blacks, and most of those were in transportation or support roles. The USAF also had very few blacks except for a couple fighter units (with 20 pilots each) -- The Tuskegee Airmen of the 99th Fighter Squadron, the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Medium Bombardment Group. The USN only allowed blacks to serve in 3 jobs, cooks, messmen or laundry workers.

There were a couple of black tank destroyer units that were a part of Patton's 3rd Army (761st "Black Panthers" and the 614th), numbering maybe 1,500 in total. The only black infantry unit to see action in Europe was the 92 Infantry Division ("Buffalo Soldiers") as part of the Fifth Army, which was mainly in Italy and Northern Africa.

Towards the end of the war, General Dwight D. Eisenhower temporarily desegregated the Army to face Hitler's advancing army on the Western Front. About 2,000 black soldiers volunteered. All in all, a few thousand blacks "fought", or saw combat action, in WWII. Given these numbers but the lack of concrete data, one can extrapolate that of the approximate 300,000 Americans that died in WWII, only a few hundred of those were black.

They were mostly on the British side, since the British offered them their freedom AND to pay them a small amount of money if they fought with them. I have no exact number however, I do have one officer- I think his name was Peter Salem. There is also another black officer whose name has currently slipped my mind. Hope this helps.

The exact number of African Americans who fought for either side in the American Revolutionary War is difficult to discern. One reliable source has as many as 5,000 Blacks fighting on the side of the American Rebels.

African Americans fought in segregated units on the home front. Black people distinguished themselves on the battlefield. Serious failures in race relations, however, undercut these accomplishments.
