Typically, Brigadiers command brigades (typically 3-5,000 troops); usually 3 brigades make up a division (commanded by a Major General). Sometimes a senior Colonel commands a brigade, in which case the term "Brigadier" is a Command Appointment rather than a substantive rank. Frequently Brigadiers occupy senior staff appointments in specialised areas such as logistics, communications, engineering support, medical services etc, or they may be appointed to such positions as "Director Special Forces" or "Director of the School of Infantry" etc.. It's terminological - in practical terms British Army Brigadiers are the same as US Army Brigadier Generals, and are treated as such in NATO officer rank designations.
