its a good rule of thumb to add atleast 500 cal. to your daily diet and its good to use that extra 500 cal in the best way you can. a good example is to add them in the form of fruits and veggies. carrots, broccoli, spinich, tomatoes bananas, Pears and those are just a few of the good ones and its good to have a couple oz. of peanut butter and an oz. or two of tuna is also a great way to use up those extra cal. i hope this helps and good luck.
Between 500 and 1000 calories per day seems to be the concensus I'm reading. 500 calories if you're producing 24-28 ounces a day (say for a 3-month-old). Up to 1000 if you're almost exclusively nursing a 10-month old perhaps.
I read an article on eHow .com that says "It's estimated that the production of one ounce of breast milk burns 20 calories." Also it goes on to state "Babies who are exclusively breastfed consume an average of 25 ounces of breast milk a day, meaning that moms burn 500 calories a day. The normal range of breast milk taken in by one to six month-old babies is 19 to 32 ounces a day. The amount varies after six months depending on how much solid food the baby eats. "
I hope that information helps and as always everyone is different!
*Depending on their age, height & bone structure & current weight of course! Everyone is different. But just because youre eating for two, remember that #2 will start out at at about an ounce, not double your serving. Just dpont do drugs or drink and eat normal but healthy; take prenatal vitamins & get exercise, live your normal like (unless you're a bungee jumping instructor)!
At least 1800 a day to keep up your milk supply. Breastfeeding burns about 500 extra calories a day.
Typically, a breast feeding woman uses up about 500 calories every day that she nurses. Sure beats a Stairmaster!!

The woman should be eating about 100 extra calories per day than what she would normally eat if she were not pregnant.
